The third (smaller) socket is for the noise reduction. However the two larger sockets are wired internally to give you stereo with a single pin headphone plug. If you look at your headphone jack it usually has two or three bands to get your stereo signal. These match up with the connectors inside the socket. The top two pins of the three pin jacks only match up with the L & R signals in the sockets.
