I agree with you about the common sense aspect. Absolutely!

However, I don't find there is an equal starting point between FA and passengers in this regard.
I.e. the FA is in charge and can dictate the passenger to be more quiet, but this doesn't work the other way around. Numerous examples in this thread and others have also proven that a passenger asking FAs to be quiet yields mixed results but mostly noncompliance.

Overall I am also of the opinion that one can not expect complete silence on any flight, and one should prepare personally for noise and light control.

I recall participating in loud (and most likely obnoxious to some) parties on long haul flights where smoking and excessive drinking and singing and yelling was practiced.
These days have now long since gone....probably good too now I'm getting older!

I would probably not begrudge FAs celebrating a birthday or somesuch if I were to encounter this.
Heck, a happy & loud UA FA is miles better than a grumpy one!
