Question re: domestic flight connecting to Int'l on 2 different PNRs

I am currently booked at the end of the month SLC-CDG, 5pm departure. I have a biz meeting early morning the same day in SJC that I would like to attend. Best-fit itinerary puts me into SLC at 4pm.

Please correct/confirm my understanding: If I book SJC-SLC on a separate PNR and misconnect, Delta is not under any obligation to help me get to CDG - i.e. it would be treated the same as a no-show?

Reticketing to include SJC as point of departure won't really be an option ... SLC-CDG was originally purchased as a V fare, and is now only selling under Y.
