I can't agree more. After a few UA flights last month it was a complete relief to come back to NZ and experience a completely full 8am A320 departure that could be fully loaded with all pax seated within 15 mins.
The US airlines created their own problem, and to be honest there is no fix. You can't just start enforcing a weight limit for carry on, and the issue is so out of control that taking a full size rollaboard (or even 30" that people try and cram in the bins) and a backpack as your "smaller item" seems to now be quite normal. I don't think giving a free bag is the solution, as luggage delays at some airports can be so bad that people just want everything with them so they can avoid waiting.
