I don't know there. I've used this option many times, (on many airlines) but always knew my new date before original flight date came around. I wouldn't think know it would be an issue. However I'm not sure. Even if they make you book a date before original flight, paying the fee twice is still likely less then booking a new last minute ticket.
OP didn't specify the non-US location, but often a one-way will be more expensive than a return, so paying the double change fee might be the best option. Worth checking out what a one-way fare is worth.
