United online check in failure...

Hey all,

Just experienced this a few days ago and wanted to see people's thoughts.

My son (Premier Silver) was traveling with my wife (no status) and my other son (no status). My son with Silver is 15. He flew to LAX last week with my wife and other son. I checked them in online ~22hours prior to departure for LAX, and the PNR split into 3 for the two upgrade requests. Even though they were split, all records had baggage attached, economy plus (the one companion), Premier Access, and added to upgrade standby list. That worked fine.

On the return, I checked them in ~23hours prior to departure, and elected to split the records again to be added to the upgrade list (given LAX to ORD they most likely won't be upgraded... but hey, why not). As the records were split and I continued with the check in, I received a message to the effect of "We cannot complete check in at this time. Please proceed to the airport for assistance." Puzzled, I went back to the homepage to see that my wife and other son (no status) were in their own PNR and indicated "Priority Boarding" (my wife has MP Explorer), but no E+ or anything like that. I tried again and received an error that said my child was traveling alone and could not be checked in online. Called Premier Desk where they had no explanation for this, and why it had worked on the outbound but not return. They said there was no possible override for them, the only thing they could do was check in at the airport.

At the airport, when they checked in, they got some sort of message that indicated a "special handling" and an agent came by and scanned her ID, and then the reservation was unlocked and that was it.

Has anyone had a similar experience/have any insight why this is happening?

They have traveled this way plenty of times, and check in online has worked 100% of the time, except for now...
