I don't see people defecting though as I don't see how someone in SYD could benefit from Asia Miles or AAdvantage: CX is much more limited in capacity than SQ and BA out of SYD gives almost no award seats in premium cabins.
People just need to learn to book early on CX, or depart on smaller cities such as ADL, CNS, etc, and tag with QF domestic flights. They always have plenty of J awards.

For J, from SYD-HKG, it would cost 45000 Asia Miles one-way, or 80000 Asia Miles return (or 40K/80K AAdvantage). For SQ, SYD-SIN-HKG, it would cost 58000 KF miles one-way, or 116000 KF miles return. So for me in the future I may swing back to CX as the miles required is significantly less.

Obviously CX does not have F to Australia so cannot compare that.
