I called the call centre to upgrade 1 ticket on a 5 discounted Y booking. Got it through and 90k points spent.

I think if you do it at check-in, it's should be for the whole journey. I do believe it's different than the cash upgrade at check-in.

Heard someone trying to use points to upgrade when he got on board (overheard the conversation) and he was told no.
