What happens if you think you won't eat, and then due to traffic, you don't get to the airport early enough to eat, and you now need a meal on the flight?
There's no penalty for saying "I want food", but the downside to saying "I don't want food" is pretty high if you change your mind after T-18 or whenever you have to order.
Also, what it really comes down to for me is that I probably SDC/standby over 50% of my J flights. So any kind of pre-ordering is broken for me, period. Unless they can load (or unload?) my meal when they process standby.
eating well on the ground provides for better choice and control over what I eat. Fortunately, at my stage of my career, I have little need to run anymore for flights, but I do understand your predicament, having done lot of hustling to flights in my early work days.
What I do appreciate is AC has good selection of fruit throughout long-hauls, which for me at least is good choice between meals.
Finally, I try to avoid +10 hr flights, so going TPAC try to stop ICN/NRT on the way, and to TATL, do early YVR departure to East Coast, preferably to YUL as relatively short hop to LHR, BRU, CDG, for beyond connection. Again, my schedule not so hectic as yours, so I plan my trips so I can manage meals better along the way.
I wish you long healthy life - but my age demands real attention to what I eat and when.
