This is one of those cases where you could carry on three bags. But like you I put my CPAP (when I used it) in my carry on for convenience. There was a flight where I was forced to check my bag and even after explaining still needed to. I pulled out the unit and put it in my backpack and decided not to push the issue too much further since I was knew the rules.
