For the OP, a 3.5 hour layover in CGD should be fine. If it comes to it, go to YYZ and then connect back to YUL .... awkward, but you'll at least get home on the same day.
My information may be dated, but I clearly remember seeing a 777 for YULCDG and a 787 for YYZCDG.

I also clearly remember pulling up the 77W fin I was flying, and seeing it operate YULCDGYUL for a few days straight until it finally rotated with another 77W that did the same thing.
