I think in the OP's case it was a little different, you can't take people to a different airport and say "there you go!"...and I think the runways iced up due to lack of traffic...I mean, think about it, if it was safe enough to DRIVE people back to BLI, the roads could not have been that bad!
If you miss a connection (as was our experience) and they strand you overnight, then, angst-inducing as it was, they can still call "weather" since they ARE flying you home the next day.
