Reporting back to help with anyone who stumbles on this thread:

Sportube Series 3 (the widest/snowboard version) worked great for me flying on Southwest; fit my snowboard + wife's skies and one set of boots. I made sure it was below 50lbs when we first went so it was not charged the $75 surcharge, both boots would have put it over 50lbs.
