Not central but excellent hotel & cabs are cheap

Introduction Normally stay at the Hilton on the seafront but wanted to be a bit closer to the airport this time so went to the Capital Grand.Location is nowhere special, at the junction of two busy highways - it takes 10 minutes to walk to the service station across the street, the nearerst ATM. I suppose you could walk to the sports grounds if you're fit, weather permitting, but cabs are cheap so who cares if the property's a bit isolated.Took a cab from the airport, 60 AED ($15), he knew to turn right at the junction in front of the hotel and drive into the car-park "exit", rather than drive up and down a block to get to the official entrance. As a Hilton Diamond they couldn't do enough for me - upgrade, late checkout, exec lounge of course. Quite eclipsed the run-off-the-mill treatment at the main Hilton on the corso, reckon this will become my Hilton of choice in future.Room upgraded to a suite with a view of the adjoining football stadium, and while I was there a splendid view of the Friday fly-past by what seemed like the entire UAE air forceIn the exec lounge you can eat breakfast, lunch & dinner, and order drinks in the evening, alcoholic drinks that is, free of charge, whatever you fancy. And one of the lounge attendants is something of a hunk, I noticed one or two guests were lone middle-aged ladies who seemed to know him quite well.Restaurant - never went in, the exec lounge has all the food you'd need, plus alcohol.Bar, yes there's a bar with noisy and sometimes live music, creating a nice atmosphere but seemed rather empty except for staff. When I asked the porter to call a cab it was nice to see an actual taxi roll up, rather than that sly trick of calling a "hotel car" at double the price. (Like some other Hiltons do, Hilton Vienna I'm thinking of you here). In all this was a very fine place to spend a few rainy days - what? yes I know AUH gets one rainy day per year, except this year it rained at least 3 days I can attest. Huge gobs of sand-filled water making a horrible mess of the parked cars. This is the perfect place to chill and recover from jet-lag on your way from SYD to wherever on one of those sensational Etihad fares.
