I think the problem you ran into was not a UA issue, but with the fact that you were in Canada. If memory serves me right, most of the staff in Canada aren't UA staff at all who work the gates.
Had somebody booked in J-class Canada-IAD-ZRH on UA. Flight to IAD got delayed, staff rebooked him on LX nonstop immediately.

Are GAs at the gate in position to provide extra help in such a situation?
