Be flexible with your airport choices and look at departing from SEA, YVR, PDX and arriving into either of the two Tokyo airports or maybe Osaka.

I'm not familiar with the UR program but since your goal is to save money rather than getting business or first class tickets, it may be best to save the points and just get the cheapest economy tickets you can find. Most points programs provide the best value when redeemed for premium cabin tickets.

Would saving on an earlier flight by arriving early, staying late, be worth the lodging costs?
Probably not as Japan is a fairly expensive country for hotels and food. If you save $100 on your flight it isn't going to last you more than a day or two.
