no rollaboards allowed in overhead on CRJ-900?

Wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this. I was on AA 5286 today from Sarasota to Charlotte and connecting to St. Louis. The inbound flight was appx 20 minutes late and looked like my flight would leave about 30-40 minutes late. I was the first to board (first class-paid ticket) on the CRJ 900 and wheeled my full size roller board on. The flight attendant said "we do not allow full size roller boards on this flight." I said it fits in the overhead and proceeded to stow it sideways and shut the bin. She repeated "you are not allowed to carry this on board. You must check it and pick it up in the jet way in Charlotte." I then took the roller board out and checked it as she told me. I asked her why. "Is there a weight restriction?" She said no.
She and I were professional throughout (at least I thought so). No dirty looks, grumbling, etc.
I asked her at the end of the flight why I had to do this since I have traveled many times on a regional jet and this bag fits as it did today. She said that PSA regional jets do not allow full size roller boards in the overhead.
Has anyone ever heard of this? Is this true? Maybe a CRJ operated by Mesa will allow the roller board on, but regional jets operated by PSA won't?
If I'm wrong, I guess I need to check and see who operates the regional jet the next time I travel. If she's wrong, I need to write AA and get her up to speed so that the next person doesn't have the same problem with their roller board. Maybe since the flight was late, she didn't want the people behind me to see that I was trying to get a roller board on the flight and they would try and do the same and possibly delay the flight even further?
I've never had this happen before. Is this correct policy?
