If you want €1000 on arrival then avoid the ATMs as they won't give you that much - unless your US bank allows you to withdraw the equivalent in US$ on the same day (unlikley). ATMs in europe have limits on what people can withdraw in cash per day.

I'd find a local (i.e. in Seattle / Portland) currency exchange company. Google is your friend to find out who they are and their rates and policies. Also ask your bank.
