At the risk of getting back on topic of the original post here....

Wouldn't there/shouldn't there be more of an issue if the mother in question had asked the man to put the Playboy away and he had refused? To ask someone to know what you are thinking (no matter how obvious you think your opinion might be) and never take the simple step of saying, "Excuse me sir, would you mind not reading that next my 14 year old?" seems more a statement about the mother and her inability to confidently say what she believes in than the man who was minding his own business (albeit inapropriately by common standards in the U.S.)
