I book ~12 hour layovers quite often. A neat way to check out a town, and brake an otherwise boring trip.
Got caught in Sydney once without a visa (yes, the usual mistake, doh!), but they were kind enough to let me and my son out of the airport and even gave us a 12 months visa on the spot. It was a GREAT day!

It is this reason I will invariably sort the united.com search results by LONGEST TRIP DURATION just to see where I could possibly get a long layover.
