Hi guys! A couple hopefully easy questions.
1. We are flying from Melbourne to Sydney on one ticket with Qantas, and then with Qatar to Europe on another. Can I check my bag all the way through, or will I need to collect in SYD? The Melbourne to Sydney is in economy, and the Qatar routes are in business, so not sure if this impacts on anything.
2. Is there anyway to upgrade using cash or BA miles for a Qantas itinerary? The only upgrade option online is with Qantas miles, which I do not have.

1) No , you will have to collect the bags at Sydney , take train or bus to T1 and then check in. The impact is that QF's economy allowance of 1 piece maximum of 23Kg will apply for MEL-SYD and QR's 40Kg business allowance will apply on SYD-Europe
2) You can pay the fare difference , but cannot upgrade usin miles. You may be able to redeem miles for a business award and then cancel the economy ticket
Do make sure to have allowed plenty of time at Sydney airport - you have no protection should you be too late to check in for the QR flight and could be up for no show fees / loss of ticket depending on fare rules
