you say courchevel is out of question, but I had the best time ever with my kid at L'Apogee this winter. Amazing hotel, on Jardin Alpin which is where most kids learn to ski, has a huge playroom for kids. after breakfast i put on my skis with my 3 year old in the morning, got him playing around with his teacher and went on my way. easiest and most convenient way to start a morning.
I was thinking along the same lines re: Zermatt.
Courchevel is not totally out of the question - I have never been there, but I agree the skiing and the hotels look very nice. The reason I am hesitating is that it will take me close to 6 hours to get there (certainly doable, but the other places on my list are most between 2-3 hours). And also that hotels will typically require booking large suites when traveling with 2 children, which brings the cost to >EUR 4,000 per night (L'Apogee still has the Chalet available, at EUR 12,600...), which is more than I am willing to spend.
