Munich - incident with KLM B737 and small prop jet approaching runway

KLM SWERVES TO AVOID AIRCRAFT ON RUNWAY AT MUNICH


AMSTELVEEN, May 4, 2004 - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight number KL1801, destination Munich international airport, yesterday was forced to take evasive action shortly after touchdown as another aircraft suddenly turned onto the runway. On board were127 passengers and 5 crew.

The KLM Boeing 737-300, registration number PH-BDP was travelling down the runway at approx. 200 kmph just after landing. The captain suddenly saw another aircraft turn onto the runway. The KLM pilot made a turn to the right and the two aircraft passed each other with just a few meters to spare.

KLM has reported the incident to air traffic control at Munich.
The Cockpit Voice Recorder has been removed from the aircraft and sent to Amsterdam for further investigation.
The crew has been flown back to the Netherlands on another KLM flight and a new crew has replaced them. A special team has been formed to deeply investigate the incident.
