The way to get around this, is to visit or call the location to make a future reservation for a certain car class, then later call customer service and have them apply the free days to the reservation. Sneaky but technically doable.
Don't expect to make friends with the location doing this however.
In other words some locations are now playing games with free days and hiding inventory so you can't reserve the more higher end car classes even though the terms and conditions allow you to use the free rental days for these classes.
Apparently one workaround (which I have not tried) is to make a reservation and then apply the coupon. I have been more successful in making a reservation for the most premium car type available and then asking nicely to someone in the booth to get a car that I really want. This obviously is a YMMV type situation and you could end up having to settle for what you reserved or negotiating an upgrade charge.
