You took a risk boarding a second train from a manned station without a ticket. Significant probability of a penalty fare if you had been checked on the train or at Guildford. The onus is on you to purchase a ticket at the first opportunity.
Worse is walking out of a station without paying instead of going to the ticket office - if they catch people doing that then they are quite likely to refer it for prosecution.
