Free Train Ride on GWR - Inadvertent Fare Dodging - What Went Wrong?

Sunday afternoon I boarded a GWR service at Kingham (small Cotswolds station, unstaffed on Sundays, on the Moreton branch NW of Oxford). No platform machine to purchase ticket, so just hopped on.

Alighted at Reading to transfer, no barriers unless your destination was Reading, no exit-fare booth (which I am used to at Paddington in situations like this).

Boarded a Reigate stopping service. Got off at Guildford, my final destination. No exit-fare booth there either, exit barriers not functioning, so I just walked out.

I am quite sure GWR does not seek to give its services away, but tell me what I might have done differently / honorably?
