United subleased the gates to AA in exchange for some ORD gates. With the AA move out of terminal 6, the terminal 6 gates owned by UAL got turned back to the airport authority so United ended up losing 4 LAX gates.
What's worse is that United has a pie-in-the-sky dream of building a terminal 9 across Sepulveda. Insanity.
