IMO, the guy was tasteless simply because he was violating community standards - even if they are old fashioned and prudish.

However, to try to force the fellow to follow a community standard would be worse as it infringes on his right to be different, to read what he wants, and to engage in a legal activity.

A perfect opportunity to open a dialogue with a 14 year old. "Did you notice what that fellow was reading?" "What do you think of reading material like that?" Conversation flows from there. One direction might be to generate ideas on how to deal with the situation if it was uncomfortable. One would have to accept that it might have been no big deal to the youngster.

A 14 year old is certainly capable of understanding and of having originated all the thoughts and opinions so far expressed on this thread.
