If booking standby on a staff travel booking but as the nominated companion (without the staff member) do Gold benefits still apply? I thought I read somewhere that standby tickets don't allow lounge access etc.

Also, does it matter if you have bags to check, if they are waiting until check in closes for the flight before confirming? I've never travelled via the staff standby scheme but may be doing so this summer.
