I keep trying to get rid of my laptop bag, but somehow it keeps showing back up in my travel kit. I've tried a few backpacks, but didn't care for how much bulkier they were vs. how much less they held than my current bag. I do have a Manfrotto camera backpack which almost does it for me -- plenty of compartments and a laptop sleeve, but once loaded it's too large to slide underneath the seat in front of me, whereas my laptop bag is.
I end up carrying a whole office with me wherever I go -- 15" laptop, scanner, a second 12" laptop (sometimes), large headphones, Kindle, tablet, power adapters/converters, etc. It's also convenient for carrying things which I refuse to check, which comes in handy with close connections, knowing my rollaboard is likely to get gate-checked as all over the overhead bins are full by that point.
I've tried doing the tablet-only thing but it's too limiting for what I do. The closest I've come is a 12" Lenovo Yoga, which I'm becoming more fond of as I use it. I do love the size and weight, the screen is high enough resolution that I don't mind the smaller physical size, and it has a real keyboard. On my last trip, I took both that and my laptop and tried my best to not pull out the Macbook and almost succeeded.
