Between Hakone and the Fuji Five Lakes area, I personally prefer Hakone. Especially if you'll be without a car. Hakone has more activities (different train rides, museums, volcanic area) in a more compact area, distinct/quaint vibe, and better quality onsen. You can see Mt.Fuji pretty up close from Hakone, too. And if you can't see Mt.Fuji from Hakone due to clouds (which is very possible), there's a good chance you won't be able to see it from the Fuji Five Lakes area either.

I think the Fiji Five Lakes area is better explored by having your own car, although i realize they have bus tours and what not. Kawaguchiko area itself is not that interesting. I've enjoyed my onsen stays in the Kawaguchiko area but, to be honest, it's not as good as Hakone onsen ryokans.

I think 2 nights in Hakone could be enjoyable, but you could definitely do it in 1 night.
points taken, thanks for your input evergrn.
tbh I do think that it's wise to choose only one of it given the timeframe.
the proximity of both area made me think than I can cram it somehow.
I'll do more research before finally decide.

I prefer natural landscape than cityscape, though. that's why I'm not keen to stay in Tokyo too long.

I prefer the five lakes - but as you say, I'd want a car. Tomato tomato. YMMV.
hehe, yes jib71. I'm inclined to the five lakes as well.
btw about rainfall, is it common on spring there?
