You could have instead used the avios for car hire or a hotel, which is 0.58p/avios, which should really be the minimum redemption level.

The rule of thumb is that if your route involves other airlines (Other than AA) or is part of a package then you cant use it.
All fair points. However, by the time I've double-dipped on my HHons Gold for a 2-week stay, and picked up other benefits from my Avis/BA car rental ... how complicated do I need my life to be?
On a future USA trip (on AA) I will explore their flight+car costings.
