This is a worry (and, I suspect a trend). I normally just have my back pack (actually a proper laptop bag with all the right compartments) with me for carry on and this holds the laptop, any other electronic equipment (camera, phone) , chargers, reading material and so on. I've not a clue if this is over the weight limit but I'm quite happy to hold up the check in queue while I first remove the reading material, then the camera.........
