When I was there, it was one of the few Marriotts with weekend lounge access, making it pretty attractive for our family. This may have changed - there's a thread here about weekend lounges that would have fresher data.
This spring, we're doing 5 nights in DC but we opted to go the extended-stay route. If points cost is a concern, consider the two Residence Inns just across the river in Arlington. (One in Rosslyn, one in Courthouse - both well-regarded properties.) Short Uber back and forth to the DC attractions, but perhaps worth it in terms of much lower points cost per night. There are also higher-category RI's in DC itself.
Not a bad idea to consider Arlington properties. Depending on the age of the kids they might think it fun to take Metro to get around (notwithstanding its dysfunction in the last 4-5 years) and the RIs are close to stations. Another option if points permit,it would be in one of the Crystal City FS service properties. I see a lot of what are obvious family tourist groups walikng on the heavily used Mt Vernon Trail along the Potomac. Just stay to the right and they are fine.
Access to the MVT is an underpass between 15th and 18th at the Crystal City Waterpark, a 5-minute walk or less from the 2 Marriotts, and they can access the Metro station from the hotels with even going outside.
