Los Angeles isn't (that) dangerous -- 12 hours is plenty of time to get out and do stuff. Depending on your tastes, you can wander around one of the outdoor shopping centers (3rd Street Promenade, Century City, "The Grove"), you can check out museums (Getty, MOCA, Museum of Tolerance, etc.), visit beaches (Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu, Manhattan, etc.)
