$159 isn't that bad compared to how long it might take to accumulate that amount of points, but it's up to each person. When I use my points I use them for hotels that charge $350-500/night & are the highest category.

Also, if you do pay for the room, look to see if there are HGI, HI, etc, in the vicinity & if those rates are better. SoCal is a big area so not sure where you're at.
