My question therefore is: does BA ever offer fares at around the same level as its' European competitors, either from the BA website or through an agent, or am I wasting my time in looking?

BA has a GBP 1400 fare between Milan and Bangkok (requires 30 days advance purchase). It allows unlimited stopovers in the UK for 200 Euros per stopover. See if this suits your needs.
