this is key ... presuming you're logged in, you can look at "View Upgrade Availability" right above the fare in the flight search results ... if it says "Upgrade Available to C+" you should automagically clear within a couple minutes of booking (the key, of course, is to look at the seat map, because the system WILL assign you a middle seat if that's all that remain unclaimed)
