Short checking luggage from JFK

I am on the 112 to LHR from JFK. I'll have a day in the office and I'll be connecting to the 199 to BOM, same ticket. It's a 15 hour layover so I asked for my luggage to be checked to LHR and you'd think I'd asked instead for the blood of the agent's first-born. I don't blame her but obviously there was some trepidation that 'London' would call to demand an explanation. An exception was made but I'll be more cautious in future. There was no way to pack HBO this time because I was delivering a bulky package.

I know short checking is frowned upon but I wish there were a policy that permitted this explicitly because it doesn't seem unreasonable.

Thought I'd add the experience to the collective hive mind's knowledge base
