Based on posts #117 and #118, the difference is Amex reimburses a seat purchase but not a ticket upgrade. When I upgraded to FC, UA is giving me more than a seat; therefore, they code it as a ticket purchase. BTW when I upgraded to FC for $217, I actually received a credit of $145 for the previous upgrade from E to E+.
