You might be better off actually buying the cheap ex-UK fare both ways, and arrange your China fights separately - potentially using avios from HKG. It's only £650 in O or £670 in O/Q, as below. This has to be booked by 16 Feb.
If you needed to change the inbound, if you could find availability in O class there'd be no fare difference as you wouldn't be changing fare, just date, so only the £150 fee payable. That's assuming you were still doing SYD-LON, not coming back from elsewhere. You could change the routing within it though, for example if there was no O available on BA via SIN for your new date but there was on CX/BA via HKG, again no fare difference since that's allowed under the current O fare.
If you couldn't find O class then the historic prices for the other classes/fares would apply.
N.B. I haven't looked at other ex-EU prices to see how they compare to the below.
Ok, that all makes sense. I'm thinking that perhaps using Avios to/from HKG might be the best plan - or investigate the railways!
Is there any way I can check what the current fares are in the other classes to get a rough idea of what the price change could be if there is no O fare availability?
Equally I'd expect to be pretty flexible with dates, so at whatever time I come to change the inbound would the ITA Matrix be my best tool to search for a new inbound flight with minimal cost increase? Would I search for any Oneworld O class fares between Australia and London?
