There's this thing called "Hansel cheap cheap prices" that most likely makes half the profits for AY, back in the days have been flying to BRU for 900€ as well in economy. Well, actually, looking at AY pages, if I recall the dates correctly, one could book the same flights for 2960€...
I think he's only so far gotten the basic points-for-upgrade, nothing very special yet (I was thinking that maybe in his case, making a upgrade bid for like 100€, it might actually work given the overall fare price).

I'm not certain how he has evaluated the economy load (i.e. just hearsay), perhaps via seating selection, perhaps just guessing, but my gut feeling is also that economy loads are high on HEL-BKK on this time of the year.
