Bare in mind that SYD-AKL flights get very full, very quick. You're likely not going to get on the flight you want the most if you leave it till last minute.
Also you'll likely have to collect your bags in SYD, clear customs and re-check with NZ so you'll need to allow plenty of time.

Your most direct routing is AKL-YVR-YUL. NZ flies direct to YVR and that way you only have one international transit instead of three (Australia, U.S.) Any reason not to do that? NZ has a solid J product I hear.
NZ doesn't offer rewards to *A memebers on most of its services.
