With 64 J class seats it takes quite a while to do the meal service.
QF seem to be masters of dragging out a service. I'm not sure why it's so difficult, and it's not like they're trying to get you to keep buying booze while you wait.

I do SYD-LAX regularly and have the opposite experience. Landing in the US I have to try hard to stay up past 6pm, but coming back to SYD I have no problems with jet lag at all. It's a shame the canned that flight with the mid arvo arrival in to LAX. Assuming you weren't trying to get much further than the west coast, it was much easier on the body clock, imo.
To the OP I would suggest trying to stay awake as long as possible ex-DFW to get your body clock clicking over to Sydney time.
