Question Change Low ticket to Flex then cancel?

Greetings,

I'll be traveling from SNN-BOS in May and I am trying to make my way in to J. I booked the ticket several months ago when there was no award availability in any class for the flight, and so I paid cash for a "Low" fair. I was assuming that when AerClub rolled out I would be able to upgrade with my stash of Avios; this obviously is not the case.

Now there are J awards available for this flight, but I'm stuck with nonrefundable cash tickets. So, the weird thing is that EI will allow me to pay a fee to change the tickets to the Flex category which would in theory would then be refundable. Is this in fact the case? Does anyone have experience cancelling a Flex ticket on EI? What form would a refund come in?

Thanks for any info you can provide. It seems like a weird loophole that you can't cancel a low fare, but you can change it to a Flex and I don't want to get burned if they're not going to honor a full refund on the new ticket...
