What you're looking for doesn't come cheap in NYC. Maybe look for chain hotels that usually feature "executive" lounges. I think some Hiltons, Hyatts and Marriotts do, but not sure about their NYC properties.
Agree, it will be pricey. NYC is pricey no matter what but booking a club level room will push it even higher. I also agree that money is best spent outside the hotel.
That being said, I thought the lounge at the JW Marriott Essex House was the best club/exec lounge I have visited in terms of variety, quality and quantity of food.
The breakfast buffet is in the hotel restaurant so its FAR above the typical lounge offering. My husband hates buffets in all forms and even he was impressed.
