If you want a smaller town feel, there is flying into DLH (Duluth, MN) Lake Superior is beautiful and you can drive up the North Shore (on Highway 61 if you're a Dylan fan) right next to the lake. Lots of lake resorts and B&B's. Split Rock Light House, Gooseberry falls, and many state parks are on that drive.
