You can do as late as boarding just started, providing if you're at one of the lounge really close to boarding gate and this will not affect your chances of op-ups.
removing hkg man at T<40min should be fine. Especially if you do it at the gate they will let you know in case ud get an opup. And ud lose the opup if you remove the MPO so in that case they wont let you do it.
