DO NOT jaywalk, because LAX police WILL write you a ticket. It would help you to brush up on a foreign language as well, before your trip........since well-over 50% of the city has limited English-speaking capabilities. If you see a small pack of wild dogs roaming around near LAX, do not be alarmed. This is common....
First, I have had at least three layovers at LAX in the 7-8 hour range in the past 4 years. Each time, I have rented a car and never was pressed for time. As for the neighborhood around LAX, it's not a great place, but then again it's not a DMZ. I have walked from the Radisson and Courtyard at LAX to In-N-Out, and I have never encountered any gang-bangers, drug-dealers, ladies-of-the-night, or the like. The reality is that the stretch of Sepulveda between LAX and In-N-Out is well-traveled and well-patrolled. I think there's more fertile and inconspicuous territory for anyone with nefarious intentions.
