A couple of months ago I was able to book two seats on the IB flight from MIA to MAD in early May with ease (I ended up not ticketing however). But even back then, the AA flight was unavailable. I've done MIA-MAD twice on AA, in winter, and both times the flights were full. If these flights are always full, you can't blame AA too much for limiting award availability, but I understand the frustration.
